Mahashivratri- Shiv puja

Mahashivratri shiva poojanam is conducted on 14th day of the dark fortnight in the auspicious Hindu month of Phalgun which falls on the no moon day in the month of Feb/March in English calendar every year. Though 14 th day of the dark fortnight of every month as per hindu calender is known as masam shivratri and shiv poojan is held. Persons interested in conducting monthly shiv puja are advised to start it from mahashivratri day and continue for full year.

Mahashivratri Date

In the year 2012 mahashivratri will fall on 20th feb, monday. As it is falling on monday it is considered to be most auspicious mahashivratri day.

Mahashivratri Chaturdashi puja

Mahashivratri chaturdashi puja is celebrated on the 14th day of the dark half of Phalgun month. It is also known as Shiva Chaudas. Shiva means shav and Chaudas - Fourteenth is prominent day for shakti poojanam. Shiv Chaudas is the day allotted for the worship of Shiva & Shakti. Shiva chaudas represents spiritual enlightenment, which is blooming of consciousness. Those who are into tantra, learn their 'mantras' on this day. The rituals of shiva Choudas was originated much before the origin of any shiv puja. Shivaist carried out their puja rituals and offered prasadam in order to protect themselves from evil spirits. Some families also offer food to their forefathers on this day. Maha shivaratri is the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. On this night the union of eternal shiva with power shakti was taken place. On this occasion, women observe Jaagran and sing hymns and devotional songs praising Lord Shiva & mata Parvati. Married and unmarried women keep fast and carry out Shiva-Parvati Puja whole night with an earnest and sincere feeling to gain the good will of Goddess Parvati as 'Gaura'(Gauri poojan) - one who blesses with long and prosperous married life. They end their fast by taking the prasad after the aarti in the morning.

Shiva pujan, rudrabhishek and daan

The Maha Rudrabhishek is particularly performed for the sake of washing away ones sins and afflictions, for bringing peace, propsertiy and happiness, along with family togetherness. Mahamrityunjaya Anusthan and Daan

Mahamrityunjaya - This is believed to be one of the most powerful yagya mentioned in Rig Veda & Shiv Puraan which has the power to bring life back even in a person close to death.The Maha Mrityunjay puja is performed for Lord Shiva to protect the person suffering from the illness or to avoid untimely death/akaal mrityu. It also protects people from any evil spirit/jadoo tona and from any other eventuality. Special emphasis is attached to Lord Shiva worship during this Jaap Yagya. This is a long procession and a group of Priests/Pandits perform this 125000 Jaap for 11 days to complete and then Havan or Homam take place on the last day.

Aghor Tantrik Anusthan on Mahashivratri

On this auspicious night, extensive prayer is offered to request earnestly lord shiva and goddess parvati to seek their blessings. On mahashivratri night consecrated chants of Lord shiva and parvati alongwith aghor tantra mantra are done which is a part of Shiv Purana and aghor tantra rituals. Special Kaal Sarp dosha nivarana on Mahashivratri
