Govardhan puja is performed on the fourth day of diwali. Govardhan is a small hillock in Braj, near Mathura. On this day, people build hillocks of cow dung and adorn them with flowers and worship them. This festival commemorates the lifting of Mount Govardhan by Lord Krishna. Annakoot is also celebrated on this day, which means ‘mountain of food’. Some people wake up for the whole night and cook fifty-six(chappan bhog) or 108 different types of food for the bhog (the offering of food) to Krishna.

Go Puja On Govardhan Puja

On 4th day of diwali Annakoot puja is done. Food hillocks are made on this day, which symbolize the Mount Govardhan. On goverdhan day mounds of food items are made representing mountain or parvat and its puja is done. Thus the day also got the name – Annakut – ‘Anna’ meaning food and ‘kut’, mountain. The ann parvat pooja also denotes annapoorna poojanam.

Innumerable varieties usually 56(chappan bhog) or 108 of food and delicious sweets are made and offered to Lord vishnu. In some of the temples ‘annakoot’ started on this day continues for the whole month of Kartik. This Day is also known as kartik padwa. People wish each other for a peaceful and happy year.
