Kubera is the son of Visrava and the grandson of Brahma. Well-known to be Lord of Riches (Dhanpati) he is the god’s treasurer and the trustee of all food grains and wealth. Lord Kuber residing in a place on Mount Kailasa is considered as the God of Wealth and as he represents the Ashta Dikpalas in the north he is also known to be the Lord of Uttaradisha.
Kubera is identified as various forms “king of kings” (Rajaraja), “Lord of wealth” (Dhanadhipati), “giver of wealth” (Dhanada), “king of Yakshas” (Yaksharajan), “Lord of Rakshasas” (Rakshasadhipati), “Lord of Guhyakas” (Guhyakadhipa), “king of Kinnaras”(Kinnararaja), “king of animals resembling men” (Mayuraja), and “king of men” (Nararaja). Kubera is also called Guhyadhipa (“Lord of the hidden”). The Atharvaveda calls him the “god of hiding”.
Kubera is often portrayed as a dwarf, with fair complexion and a big belly, having three legs, only eight teeth, one eye, and being adorned with jewels. He resembles a tiny man; lives in the depths of the earth and guards buried treasure.
Lord Kubera watches treasure of jewels, gold, pearls, silver and nine Nidhis. He uses a flying chariot known as Pushpak for travelling all around. He is shown as holding a purse containing money, a bowl, a mace and a fruit and is made with Brass, Astadhatu and Stone most of the time.
